NEW HANS ACCESSORY PROVIDES ADDED DRIVER SAFETY
June 16, 2009
INDIANAPOLIS,
June 16 – Race car drivers are finding added back and neck protection in
a new safety accessory designed for use with the HANS Device.
Indianapolis-based Mark One Composites, Inc. manufactures the Glide
Plate extension, an enhancement to the
head-and-neck restraint system.
“The Glide Plate reduces the chance of injury in a rearward accident,”
Mark One owner Jeff Mowins said. “It minimizes the potential for the
head-and-neck restraint to catch on or become wedged under the headrest
padding and result in injury.”
The Glide Plate (GP) has been approved for use by IndyCar Series drivers
and is also applicable to sports cars and stock cars. Twenty of the
drivers competing in the 2009 Indianapolis 500 adopted the added safety
feature, as have a number of Indy Lights and sports car drivers
including veteran driver Darren Manning and Mazdaspeed’s rising star
Conor Daly.

“I’ve used the Glide Plate in both IndyCar and Grand Am races,” Manning
said. “I couldn’t be more pleased with the fitting in both cockpits.”
While the GP was designed for top-tier racing series, it is affordable
for drivers at all levels of racing. The extension attaches simply to
any HANS head-and-neck restraint system with four mounting screws.
